Detailed Tour Plan
Day 1 – Cusco to Wayqecha Lodge | High Andes to Upper Cloud Forest
We depart very early from Cusco to take full advantage of peak morning bird activity. Our first stop is Huacarpay Lake, a high-Andean wetland surrounded by dry intermontane scrub, agricultural terraces, and open grasslands. This site provides an excellent introduction to Andean birdlife, where we search for waterfowl, rails, seedeaters, ground-tyrants, and other high-altitude specialists.
Continuing along the legendary Manu Road, we ascend through the Andean highlands toward the eastern slope of the Andes. Frequent birding stops allow us to observe the gradual transition from open puna habitats into humid montane forest. These elevational changes are especially productive, often producing new species at each stop.
By mid to late afternoon, we arrive at Wayqecha Lodge, located within pristine upper cloud forest at the edge of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Afternoon birding around the lodge focuses on hummingbird activity, mixed-species flocks, and understory birds along nearby trails. Cooler temperatures make this an ideal time for relaxed, productive birding.
Overnight: Wayqecha Lodge
Day 2 – Wayqecha Cloud Forest | Upper Montane Specialties
A full day is dedicated to exploring the upper montane cloud forest surrounding Wayqecha. The habitat here is characterized by moss-draped trees, abundant epiphytes, tree ferns, and dense understory, supporting a highly specialized avifauna adapted to cool and wet conditions.
Birding is focused on locating and following mixed-species flocks, often led by tanagers and flycatchers, as well as monitoring fruiting trees and flowering plants that attract both canopy and understory species. Birding is methodical and patient—flocks can take time to locate, but once found they often yield impressive diversity.
Depending on conditions, time is also spent along roadsides and forest edges where light gaps increase activity.
Key species may include:
Golden-plumed Parakeet, Masked Fruiteater, Yungas Manakin, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Tyrian Metaltail, Long-tailed Sylph, and numerous montane hummingbirds.
Overnight: Wayqecha Lodge
Day 3 – Wayqecha to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge | Cloud Forest Descent
After breakfast, we begin a slow, bird-focused descent along one of the most scenic and species-rich sections of the Manu Road. Even minor changes in elevation often produce new birds, making this day particularly rewarding for list-building and photography.
As the forest becomes taller and warmer, bromeliads, palms, and lianas increase in abundance. This habitat transition is excellent for trogons, toucanets, quetzals, and brightly colored tanagers. We make frequent stops to scan fruiting trees, listen for vocalizations, and explore short trails.
In the afternoon, we visit an active Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where males perform dramatic courtship displays—one of the most iconic birding experiences in South America.
Overnight: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Day 4 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge | Lower Montane Diversity
We spend the entire day birding the highly productive trail network around Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, situated in lower montane forest. This elevation zone often represents the peak of color and diversity along the Manu Road, blending Andean and Amazonian elements.
Early morning is devoted to canopy scanning along trails and forest edges, followed by more focused understory birding later in the day. Mixed-species flocks are frequent and often large, containing woodcreepers, flycatchers, antbirds, and multiple tanager species.
Target species may include:
Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, White-crowned Tapaculo, Versicolored Barbet, and large mixed flocks of tanagers, woodcreepers, and flycatchers.
Overnight: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Day 5 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Manu Biological Station | Transition to the Foothills
Today we descend further into the Amazonian foothills, where bird diversity increases dramatically. These forests are structurally complex, with dense understory, tall canopy, and abundant bamboo stands, supporting a rich mix of Andean and Amazonian species.
Birding en route focuses on bamboo patches, forest edges, river corridors, and roadside clearings—specialized habitats that often hold unique species not found elsewhere. By late afternoon, we arrive at Manu Biological Station, our base for foothill exploration.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 6 – Manu Biological Station | Foothill Forest Specialists
A full day is spent birding the extensive trail system around the station. The foothills are especially rich in antbirds, manakins, and secretive understory specialists, and careful listening is essential.
We focus on known army ant routes, increasing our chances of observing specialized ant-followers. Canopy birding, forest-edge exploration, and mixed flocks add further diversity throughout the day.
Possible highlights:
Fiery-capped Manakin, Bamboo Antshrike, Pygmy Antwren, multiple antbird species, Broad-billed Motmot, and canopy flycatchers.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 7 – Manu Biological Station | Carbon Parrot Clay Lick | Hummingbird Garden | Guadalupe Road
An early morning departure (approximately one hour by vehicle) brings us to the Carbon Parrot Clay Lick, offering excellent opportunities to observe parrots and parakeets at close range as they gather to ingest mineral-rich clay.
On the return journey, we stop at a hummingbird garden, where flowering plants attract a variety of lowland and foothill hummingbirds.
After lunch, we explore the Guadalupe Road, a productive foothill route known for raptors, mixed flocks, and forest-edge species. The remainder of the day allows time to revisit productive trails and search for previously missed species.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 8 – Manu Biological Station to Manu Pantiacolla Lodge | Flooded Forest Exploration
Morning birding along the Manu Road continues toward Atalaya River Port, with stops for foothill species along the way. From Atalaya, we travel by motorized boat to Manu Pantiacolla Lodge, birding riverbanks and riparian forest en route.
Afternoon birding around the lodge focuses on river-edge habitats and seasonally flooded forest, offering a new set of species distinct from upland foothill forest.
Overnight: Manu Pantiacolla Lodge
Day 9 – Manu Pantiacolla Lodge | Foothill Forest Specialists
Optional early morning visit to the Pantiacolla Parrot Clay Lick, one of the best sites for observing Blue-headed Macaw, parrots, and parakeets.
The rest of the day is dedicated to extended exploration of foothill and floodplain forest, focusing on forest trails, mixed-species flocks, and fruiting trees around the lodge.
Overnight: Manu Pantiacolla Lodge
Day 10 – Manu Pantiacolla Lodge to Manu Biological Station
Morning birding around Pantiacolla Lodge before returning by boat and vehicle to Manu Biological Station, birding en route.
The afternoon provides flexibility to revisit productive foothill areas, target specific species, or relax after several intensive birding days.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 11 – Manu Biological Station to Cusco | Final Elevational Revisit
After early morning birding, we begin our return journey to Cusco. Strategic stops are made at key elevations along the Manu Road to target missed species and observe final elevational turnover from foothills back to the Andes.
Arrival in Cusco in the evening, concluding this comprehensive Manu birding expedition.
