Day 8 – Return to Cusco with Final Birding Stops
Early morning birding near the biological station before returning to Cusco, with strategic stops along the Manu Road to revisit key elevations and add final species.
Detailed Tour Plan
Day 1 – Cusco to Wayqecha Lodge | High Andes to Upper Cloud Forest
We depart very early from Cusco, timing our departure to coincide with peak morning bird activity. Our first birding stop is at Huacarpay Lake, a high-Andean wetland surrounded by dry intermontane scrub and agricultural terraces. This area provides an excellent introduction to Andean birdlife and often produces species such as Andean waterfowl, seedeaters, and ground-tyrants.
From Huacarpay, we continue along the Manu Road, stopping frequently as the landscape shifts from open Andean habitats into increasingly humid montane forest. These transitions are ideal for observing changes in bird communities, and even short stops can be highly productive.
By mid-to-late afternoon, we arrive at Wayqecha Lodge, set within pristine upper cloud forest. The lodge surroundings are particularly rich in hummingbirds and mixed flocks, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable afternoon birding.
Overnight: Wayqecha Lodge
Day 2 – Wayqecha Cloud Forest | Upper Montane Specialties
A full day is dedicated to birding the upper montane cloud forest around Wayqecha. The habitat here is characterized by moss-draped trees, abundant epiphytes, and dense understory, supporting a specialized avifauna adapted to cooler, wetter conditions.
We focus on mixed-species flocks, often led by tanagers and flycatchers, and spend time at fruiting trees and flowering plants that attract both canopy and understory species. Birding is methodical and patient, as flocks can take time to locate but often yield impressive diversity once found.
Key species may include:
Golden-plumed Parakeet, Masked Fruiteater, Yungas Manakin, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Tyrian Metaltail, and numerous montane hummingbirds.
Overnight: Wayqecha Lodge
Day 3 – Wayqecha to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge | Cloud Forest Descent
After breakfast, we begin a slow, bird-focused descent through one of the most scenic sections of the Manu Road. Even minor changes in elevation can produce new species, making this day especially exciting for listing birders.
The forest gradually becomes taller and warmer, with increasing numbers of bromeliads, palms, and lianas. This zone is excellent for trogons, toucanets, quetzals, and brightly colored tanagers.
In the afternoon, we visit an active Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, where males perform elaborate courtship displays—one of the most iconic wildlife spectacles in South America.
Overnight: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Day 4 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge | Lower Montane Diversity
We spend the entire day exploring the highly productive trail network around Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge, situated in lower montane forest. This elevation band is often the most colorful and diverse portion of the Manu Road, combining elements from both higher cloud forest and lower foothill habitats.
Birding is focused on canopy scanning in the early morning, followed by understory and trail-based birding later in the day.
Target species may include:
Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, White-crowned Tapaculo, Versicolored Barbet, and large mixed flocks of tanagers, woodcreepers, and flycatchers.
Overnight: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Day 5 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Manu Biological Station | Transition to the Foothills
Today we descend into the Amazonian foothills, where bird diversity increases dramatically. These forests are structurally complex and support a mix of Andean and Amazonian species.
En route, we carefully bird bamboo stands, forest edges, and river corridors—specialized habitats that often hold species not found elsewhere. By late afternoon, we arrive at the Manu Biological Station, our base for foothill exploration.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 6 – Manu Biological Station | Foothill Forest Specialists
A full day is spent birding the trail system around the station. The foothills are particularly rich in antbirds, manakins, and understory specialists, and careful listening is essential.
We focus on areas known for army ant activity, increasing our chances of seeing specialized ant-followers. Canopy birding and mixed flocks add further diversity throughout the day.
Possible highlights:
Fiery-capped Manakin, Bamboo Antshrike, Pygmy Antwren, several antbird species, Broad-billed Motmot, canopy flycatchers.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 7 – Manu Biological Station | Carbon Parrot Clay Lick | Hummingbird Garden | Guadalupe Road
An early morning departure (approximately one hour by vehicle) brings us to the Carbon Parrot Clay Lick, offering excellent opportunities to observe parrots and parakeets at close range as they gather to ingest mineral-rich clay.
On the return journey, we stop at a hummingbird garden, where flowering plants attract a variety of lowland and foothill hummingbirds.
After lunch, we explore the Guadalupe Road, a productive foothill route known for raptors, mixed flocks, and forest-edge species. The remainder of the day allows time to revisit productive trails and search for previously missed species.
Overnight: Manu Biological Station
Day 8 – Manu Biological Station to Cusco | Final Elevational Revisit
After early morning birding, we begin our return to Cusco, stopping at key elevations along the Manu Road to target species missed earlier. The return journey offers a final chance to observe elevational turnover and consolidate the tour’s impressive species list.
