Detailed Tour Plan

Day 1 – Cusco to Wayqecha Lodge – High Andes to Upper Cloud Forest

We depart Cusco very early to capitalize on peak morning bird activity. Our first birding stop is Huacarpay Lake, a high-Andean wetland surrounded by dry intermontane scrub, agricultural terraces, and grasslands. This site introduces classic Andean birdlife, including waterfowl, rails, seedeaters, ground-tyrants, and other high-altitude specialists.

We then continue along the legendary Manu Road, ascending through puna grasslands and descending the eastern slope of the Andes. Frequent stops allow us to observe dramatic elevational changes and constant species turnover.

Arrival at Wayqecha Lodge in the mid to late afternoon places us within pristine upper cloud forest at the edge of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Afternoon birding focuses on hummingbird feeders, mixed-species flocks, and understory birds along nearby trails.

Day 2 – Wayqecha Cloud Forest – Upper Montane Specialties

A full day exploring the cool, moss-draped upper montane cloud forest surrounding Wayqecha. The habitat is characterized by dense understory, tree ferns, and abundant epiphytes, supporting a highly specialized avifauna.

Birding focuses on:

As the forest becomes taller and warmer, bromeliads, palms, and lianas increase. This transition zone is ideal for trogons, toucanets, quetzals, and colorful tanagers. We make frequent stops for scanning, listening, and short trail walks.

In the afternoon, we visit an active Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, one of South America’s most iconic birding spectacles.

Day 4 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Lower Montane Forest Diversity

A full day birding the highly productive trail system around the lodge. This lower montane zone often holds the highest concentration of color and diversity along the Manu Road.

Day 5 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Manu Biological Station – Transition to the Amazonian Foothills

Descending further into the foothills, bird diversity increases dramatically. These forests are structurally complex, with dense understory, tall canopy, and abundant bamboo stands.

Day 6 – Manu Biological Station – Foothill Forest Specialists

On the return, we stop at a hummingbird garden, followed by afternoon birding along Guadalupe Road, a productive foothill route known for raptors, forest-edge species, and mixed flocks.

Day 8 – Manu Biological Station to Manu Pantiacolla Lodge – Flooded Forest Exploration

Morning birding continues toward Atalaya River Port, with stops for foothill species. From Atalaya, we travel by motorized boat, birding riverbanks and riparian forest en route.

Afternoon birding around Manu Pantiacolla Lodge focuses on flooded forest and river-edge habitats.

Day 9 – Manu Pantiacolla Lodge Foothill & Floodplain Forest

Optional early visit to the Pantiacolla Parrot Clay Lick, an excellent site for Blue-headed Macaw and other parrots.
