MANU CLOUD FOREST & AMAZON LOWLANDS 15 DAYS BIRDING TOUR
Manu Birding Expedition: From the High Andes to the Heart of the Amazon 15 Days
This extraordinary journey follows one of the most biodiverse routes on Earth, descending from the high Andes of Cusco through cloud forest, foothills, and into the pristine lowland rainforests of Manu National Park. Over fifteen days, we experience dramatic changes in elevation, climate, and habitat, resulting in an unparalleled diversity of birdlife and wildlife encounters.
Beginning in the high Andes, the tour quickly introduces classic Andean species at Huacarpay Lake before following the legendary Manu Road. As we descend the eastern slope of the Andes, each change in elevation reveals new ecosystems and birds, from puna grasslands and upper cloud forest to lush montane and foothill rainforest. Time at Wayqecha Lodge allows in-depth exploration of mossy cloud forest rich in hummingbirds, tanagers, fruiteaters, and mixed-species flocks.
Continuing downhill, we enter one of the most species-rich sections of the Andes, where trogons, quetzals, toucanets, and vibrant tanagers thrive. Visits to active Andean Cock-of-the-Rock leks offer unforgettable wildlife spectacles. The lower montane forests around Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge provide some of the highest bird diversity of the trip, blending Andean and Amazonian elements.
As we reach the Amazonian foothills, diversity increases dramatically. Extensive trail systems, bamboo stands, river corridors, and army ant swarms support a wealth of antbirds, manakins, motmots, and secretive understory species. Several parrot clay licks provide close-range views of parrots, parakeets, and macaws gathering to feed on mineral-rich soils.
River travel brings us deeper into the Amazon Basin, where flooded forests, oxbow lakes, and terra firme rainforest dominate. Inside Manu National Park, birding by canoe and on foot reveals iconic lowland species such as macaws, hoatzins, kingfishers, and countless forest specialists. Visits to major macaw clay licks showcase some of the most impressive wildlife congregations in the Amazon.
The journey concludes with a gradual return toward the foothills and Andes, revisiting key elevations to search for missed species and reflect on the remarkable ecological transitions experienced along the Manu Road.
This expedition offers an immersive exploration of one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots, combining expert-guided birding, comfortable wilderness lodges, and access to some of the most pristine habitats remaining in South America.
