Detailed Tour Plan
Day 1 – Cusco to Wayqecha Lodge – High Andes to Upper Cloud Forest
An early departure from Cusco allows us to take advantage of peak morning bird activity. Our first stop is Huacarpay Lake, a high-Andean wetland surrounded by dry scrub, agricultural terraces, and grasslands. Here we look for Andean waterfowl, rails, seedeaters, ground-tyrants, and other high-altitude specialists.
Continuing along the famous Manu Road, we travel through puna grasslands and gradually descend the eastern slope of the Andes. Frequent birding stops highlight dramatic habitat and species changes.
Arrival at Wayqecha Lodge in the afternoon places us within pristine upper cloud forest at the edge of the Manu Biosphere Reserve. Afternoon birding focuses on hummingbird feeders, mixed flocks, and forest trails.

Day 2 – Wayqecha Cloud Forest – Upper Montane Specialties
A full day exploring the moss-draped upper montane cloud forest. Dense understory, tree ferns, and abundant epiphytes support a highly specialized avifauna adapted to cool and wet conditions.
Birding focuses on mixed-species flocks, fruiting trees, flowering plants, forest edges, and roadside activity.
Possible species include: Golden-plumed Parakeet, Masked Fruiteater, Yungas Manakin, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Tyrian Metaltail, Long-tailed Sylph, and a rich assemblage of montane hummingbirds.

Day 3 – Wayqecha to Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Cloud Forest Descent
A slow, bird-focused descent along one of the most productive birding roads in the world. Small elevation changes frequently bring new species.
As the forest becomes warmer and taller, bromeliads, palms, and lianas increase. We search for trogons, toucanets, quetzals, and colorful tanagers while making frequent stops for photography and short walks.
In the afternoon, we visit an active Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek, witnessing spectacular courtship displays.

Day 4 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge – Lower Montane Forest Diversity
A full day birding the lodge’s excellent trail system in lower montane forest, often the most colorful and diverse zone of the Manu Road.
Morning canopy scanning is followed by focused understory birding and mixed-flock activity throughout the day.
Target species may include: Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Golden-headed Quetzal, Blue-banded Toucanet, White-crowned Tapaculo, Versicolored Barbet, and numerous tanagers, woodcreepers, flycatchers, and antbirds.

Day 5 – Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Manu Biological Station – Transition into the Amazonian Foothills
Descending further into the foothills, bird diversity increases dramatically. These forests are structurally complex, with bamboo stands, tall canopy, and dense understory.
Birding en route targets bamboo specialists, forest edges, river corridors, and roadside clearings. Arrival at Manu Biological Station in the afternoon.

Day 6 – Manu Biological Station – Foothill Forest Specialists
A full day exploring the extensive trail system around the station. The foothills are particularly rich in antbirds, manakins, and secretive understory species.
Special focus on army ant swarms, canopy birding, and mixed flocks.
Highlights may include: Fiery-capped Manakin, Bamboo Antshrike, Pygmy Antwren, Broad-billed Motmot, and multiple antbird species.

Day 8 – Manu Biological Station to Manu Pantiacolla Lodge – Flooded Forest Exploration
Morning birding along the Manu Road toward Atalaya River Port, with stops for foothill species. From Atalaya, we travel by motorized boat, birding riverbanks and riparian forest en route to Manu Pantiacolla Lodge.
Afternoon birding focuses on flooded forest and river-edge habitats.

Day 9 – Manu Pantiacolla Lodge –Foothill & Floodplain Forest
Optional early visit to the Pantiacolla Parrot Clay Lick, an excellent site for Blue-headed Macaw and other parrots.
